Summary: Jun was an interior designer for Remarkable Design Graphic Company, his life had been simple until he met Ohno – a perfectionist client who was very difficult to deal with. On the other hand, Jun eventually found out that Ohno was also a loving dad to his only son…
“I’m home.” Ohno whispered softly, he expected no one will answer his soft call but looked like he was wrong when he heard two voices answered in unison “Welcome home.”
Ohno looked up from his feet, noticing another pair of shoes were lining up nicely beside Kazu’s sneaker. His lips twitched upward for a while, knowing he must be welcomed with a warm dinner tonight, as other nights during the weeks his guest came. He hurriedly got his slipper, his stomach had rumbled since he got off the train and the smell of something cooked in tomato had definitely defeated the smell of bento he bought at the nearest konbini. A, now, usual view came to his sight as he entered the diner area. His son sat quietly waiting for their guess plating a pasta and the other man was looking at him, gesturing to him to sit beside his son which Ohno happily obliged but he, of course, has an image to maintain.
“Kazu, you shouldn't bother Matsumoto san like this. He doesn't have time to babysit you.” Ohno took out his groceries and that made his son smirks.
“Yeah, and I have to eat these crap? Yesterday was enough Dad.” His son grinned, teasing him.
“You do realize your son is still in growing period, don't you? He can't always eat unhealthy konbini bento like this. Besides, I do have time when someone stops asking for design revision.” The man put a plate full of steaming spaghetti in front of him and that was enough for Ohno to hold on anything he was about to say. He just uniting his hands in front of his chest grunting 'itadakimasu’.
The meal was so good that Ohno couldn't remember when the last time he ate something so delicious. One thing that he had also noticed was how Jun paid attention into details just like his design, that man-made octopus sausage and shredded the onion so that Kazu would eat them, just how old does he think his son was? But seemed like Kazu didn't mind the exceed effort.
“You really don't have to accompany me to the bus station you know.” Ohno just humming hearing Jun said the same thing for the nth time that week.
“You never allow me to drive you home so this the least I can do.” They stood in line as it was the last bus, a lot of people trying to get on.
“And leave Kazu on his own? I don't think so.” Jun chuckled
“How's your new project going?”
“Fine, at least now I don't need to face moody contractor that demand changes in most everything.” Wait, was it a tease and grin on Jun’s tone? Ohno ignored a slight of jealousy from hearing the words, he was struggling with Jun’s replacement that didn’t understand what he wanted even though he had told him for the 5th time, while Jun was having a great complimentary on his design with his new client. Ohno hid the feeling with murmuring “That’s why your design won’t improve.”
“Excuse me? My design is good enough to be placed all over Tokyo, just so you know.” Ohno looked up seeing the furious on Jun’s face but Ohno thought it was the most beautiful expression he had seen on Jun. He didn’t get to answer Jun’s furious statement as the bus came and Jun hurriedly got on without saying goodbye. Now, he had really done it, he made Jun mad.
***
It had been a week after their argument on the bus stop that Ohno didn’t get the chance to see Jun. It’s not like that guy stopped coming to his house, he still came by and cooked for Kazu, but not him. The week had also tied him to the office and Jun left the house earlier before he went back home. He asked Kazu why Jun left early, or why there’s no portion of meals for him but he made the wrong question as Kazu glared back at him in annoyance, blaming him for cutting Jun’s visit shorter. He should have just admitted that he was jealous of Jun unknown new client, not in this world it ever happen.
Ohno tried to focus on the blue sheet he had in his hand, he scrunched seeing the design from the new guy that replacing Jun, just like he expected, that guy didn’t get a clue of what he wanted. He tempted to squeeze the sheet into a ball or just shred it away. It really was not worthy of his time. Not when he was in a hot construction site, where clouds of dust are flying around and he was attempted to throw the nearest hammer to the guy who gave this shit to him.
“Don’t give me that face, please.” Okada sipped his Starbuck next to him. Ohno couldn’t believe how that man could take that miscalculation design lightly. “What face should I made then?”
“You’re the one shoving him away you know, you and your stubbornness pride. You should just tell him that you like his designs and wants him to improve better than insulting all his hard work.” Okada patted his shoulder and walked away before he turned and beckoned him to come toward him.
Ohno inhaled deeply through his mask and walked to where Okada stood near the construction elevator. His partner pointed on the ground level where helmets were stored, but he was sure, the helmet was not what Okada mean. He squinted his eyes to see clearer then he saw Jun’s head among the workers from his company. He looked at Okada in disbelief, how could he made Jun came to their project site where he no longer the interior designer.
“I asked to their agency to check. You can thank me later.” Okada knocked on his helmet and pushed him to temporary construction elevator, whispering “you’d better apologize nicely this time.”
Ohno just shook his head, he hated mixing personal and works but it seemed for this time, he had no other option. They could have all the argument outside the work site for as long as they wanted, but this was his project site, their workplace, time for them, or him, to get their priority set and get their work done no matter how, that’s professional. So Ohno stepped into the elevator, ready to welcome the man that he, not, secretly missed.
Ohno looked out the mash wire around the elevator and he could see Jun was looking up at him, shielding his eyes from the sun’s ray. There was nothing unusual in the elevator, he had used it since the starting of the project 2 months ago, but today, he sensed something different, the box he was in shook a little before it got harder and he could hear loud voices like something was smashed into a steel beam. His eyes were fixed on Jun’s horrified face when the elevator he was in broke off from its hinges and the box descended uncontrollably, making him scrunched down in instant to minimize the impact, his hands above his head. He forgot to scream, all he saw behind his eyelids were Kazu’s face, started from the boy was still a baby, the cry when he first entered the kindergarten, the smile on his 10th birthday in Disneyland, then suddenly an image from last week when Jun cooked them pasta replayed in his head, the three of them laughing with warm pasta in front of them. He barely noticed the brake came off, or the steel beam above him hit his head, that’s when everything went black.
***
“And he's back.” Ohno felt his eyes glued, he could only see from small crack of his eyes but he found strangers with a white robe, look like doctors. He tried to speak but his voice was lost, all he felt was an extreme pain on his leg and his head right side. He barely heard what they said but he could figure they were calling someone. “Bring Ohno Satoshi's family please, one at a time.”
Ohno was tempted to close his eyes again when he saw the face he missed so much hurrying to his side. He could see his perfectly styled hair was disheveled, his shirt had brownish stained, rolled up to his elbow with no necktie. “J…”
“Oh… Satoshi kun, how are you feeling?” Ohno felt strange to listen Jun called his name, but he likes how it sounded.
“He's actually doing fine after the operation Matsumoto san, nothing you need to worry about. I will ask the nurse preparing a room for him. I'll come back with administrative form later.” One with the doctor robe said, too quickly for Ohno to actually understood, but seemed Jun understood all the words. He saw Jun nodded, saying thank you as the doctor went out the curtains.
“Wh...wha…” Ohno couldn’t get his words put, his throat felt so dry but Jun reacted fast, he took a glass of water from his bedside and slipped the straw to his dry lips.
“The elevator fell down from the fifth floor, there was nothing we can do to stop it.” Jun patted excessive water onto his lips and Ohno suddenly felt so much better. “We get you out from the elevator and you're lucky to wear the helmet, it saved you, if not, your head must be the one broke into two instead of that helmet.”
“But you broke your leg,” Jun added when Ohno winched trying to move his leg. Ohno groaned in frustrations, just in time the doctor came in.
“Matsumoto-san, we've prepared the room for Ohno san, just need your signature here.” Ohno peaked on the paper doctor gave him, he saw Jun had signed his surgery permit as his spouse, Ohno looked at him questioningly, glad the doctor was occupied with taking off his IV.
“The doctor knew Okada is not your family, no one is able to sign on your behalf, so I did,” Jun whispered while signing the transfers to observation room form. Ohno just nodded his thanks, still couldn't believe Jun would responsible for him.
“Okada san is picking Kazu. I'll let them know your room number once you're there.” Jun smiled returning the form and followed as Ohno strolled to his observation room.
***
“Why he hasn’t wake up yet? What if the doctors were wrong? And dad can’t…” Ohno heard whispers around them, it was Kazu’s voice that he heard first. He was about to open his eyes and assuring his boy.
“Sstt… Kazu, you can’t say that, your dad is strong, he’ll be fine. He just under sedation from his surgery now.” but seemed he was too late, Jun had taken his part to assure Kazu. “he will wake up soon, don’t worry, he won’t leave you alone.”
“I shouldn’t be mad at him this morning. I was so mad, I thought he forbids you to come to our house, and I haven’t say sorry.” Kazu sobbed that answered by Jun’s chuckle.
“You’re so silly, there’s no way your dad can forbid me to come to your house.” Jun was silent for a moment before adding. “It’s okay to have an argument, but you two should talk about it before getting mad. Maybe he has a reason for his actions, just need you to understand.”
Ohno felt it will be too impolite to listen more, so he opened his eyes and got to see Kazu’s worried face. That was when he thought Kazu really was just a kid. He seemed to find little Kazu that was afraid to be left behind. He tried to smile, feeling lucky the nurse had changed his cloth and wiped all the dirt so he was presentable now.
“DAD! You’ve wake!” Ohno patted his son’s head and this time Kazu let him, throwing himself to his chest, hugging him tightly that Ohno felt he might break another bone. This time, it was his turn to assure Kazu. “I’m fine, the doctor said I can leave tomorrow, don’t worry baby.”
“I’m not a baby.” maybe Kazu suddenly realized his act and got shy from it. Ohno just laughed seeing his son’s face burnt with embarrassment.
“Now, now, I don’t know about you, but I’m so hungry right now, why don't we all eat here. And next time, try not to scare the shit out of us.” Okada showed up with a plastic bag from an Italian restaurant and started to unpack boxes of pasta from inside it.
Ohno quietly nibbled on his food, the pasta at least was better than hospital food but definitely worse than Jun’s pasta. He was staring at the man who busily helped Kazu to eat since the boy’s hand hadn’t fully recovered yet. It seemed like someone else in the room saw his staring, and Okada coughed a little, which catching everyone’s attention.
“Matsumoto-san, I don’t know that you’ve met Kazu before and he seemed to be attached to you now.” Okada teased them and it was amusing for Ohno to see Jun’s ears turned red.
“Jun-san helped me with my photography assignment uncle Okada, you should see the pictures he’s taken, it’s so beautiful.” Kazu chirped in.
“I’m sure it is, only a beautiful one can produce a beautiful picture, right Satoshi?” Ohno didn’t expect the question thrown at him, he choked on that meatball he just ate, panicky searching for the glass on his bed table when Jun beat him and offered the glass which he accepted gladly. Okada eyes glimpsed with something that Ohno had to learn not to dismiss, he knew that teasing glimpse way too well.
“Well, look at the time, I think we’d better leave so you can take some rest. Come on Kazu, your aunt told me you better stay with us during your father hospitalized.” Okada stood after some more hours of their chat while Ohno could see reluctance on Kazu face. He turned to see his son, it was nice of Aoi to think of Kazu, and usually, Kazu likes to stay with them too. “What's wrong Kaz?”
“Can't I stay home? I don't want to bother uncle and aunty. And the new baby.” That reminded Ohno, yes, the pair just had a baby, letting Kazu stay there will add worry to Aoi, and he didn’t want it.
“You'll be alone, I don't think it's a good idea.” Okada objected and Ohno thought he was right. Kazu was still a middle schooler, he couldn’t be alone at home, he’ll need someone to look after him, despite he wanted to admit it or not, but he also could understand why Kazu wanted to stay home, with his broken arm, it would not be comfortable for him to sleep on the sofa, no matter how fluffy it was, since Okada already changed the 2nd bedroom to his baby’s room.
“It’ll just a night Kaz, I will be home tomorrow. Please stay with your uncle tonight, okay?” It broke Ohno heart to see his son nodded slowly but he didn’t have any choice, or so he thought.
“Do you mind if I look after Kazu tonight? He can come with me to my house or if you allowed, I can stay over at your house to look after him.” Jun gave a sudden idea, a very tempting one and it seemed like Ohno had no better option when Kazu jumped around, begging him permission for Jun to stay overnight. So Ohno gave up, “if it was not a bother for you Jun kun.”
Jun just smiled seeing the enthusiasm that Kazu show. “I will need to grab my clothes first though.”
***
The one night overstay prolonged to another night and another until Ohno was allowed to leave the hospital on the third day. During his stay in the hospital, Jun always came after work to fetch Kazu who came to his daddy after school. Ohno could feel his bond with Kazu was strengthen, the boy felt more open up to him. Maybe their accident had finally made them realized how they actually cared and needed each other. They now used to talk about everything until Jun came brought them dinner and they sat to eat together. Though sometimes he wished Jun could leave sooner since it was so easy to see how the doctors and nurses are ogling over him.
It's good that he finally allowed to come home with all the notes not to strain himself with work. Hell, even his doctor told Jun precisely on what he should do or shouldn't do. At the very least he was allowed to go with a note how lucky he was for having Jun as his partner. The miscommunication that he didn't bother to revise.
“Thank you.” Ohno slipped on the words as he sat on his sofa, leg supported with a pillow, seeing Jun putting his dirty laundry into the washing machine. He was surprised when he got home, seeing his house was more liveable and clean. Kazu bragged how he had clean his own room and helped Jun to clean the rest of his house, something he hadn't managed before.
“What for?” Jun asked, flopped himself beside him, passed him a can of beer and Ohno wondered how that felt so natural for them.
“Everything, thank you for taking care of Kazu, the house.” 'me’ he held himself from saying the last word. He knew Jun cared for Kazu, the sole reason the man put up with him all along.
“You know, I hate you before, but maybe you're just a clueless father who wants everything to be perfect.” Jun chuckled nervously.
“You're right to hate me. I'll hate myself too if I were you.”
“But you're actually okay now, at least according to your son.” Jun smiled.
“Kazu is everything I have. The only thing matter most for me. I live for him.” Ohno looked out the window. The memory he saw when he fell on the elevator playing inside his head. “Kazu's mom left him when he was just one month old. We never loved each other, but I know I love Kazu once he was born. I struggled, I want my son has a decent life. I work with him inside the carrier on my back.” Ohno remembered his first project. No one could look after Kazu, so he brought his baby to the project site, carrying him with a carrier.
“It was always like that. Did he told you he cried on his first day in kindergarten?” Ohno looked at Jun who attentively hearing his story. He diverted his eyes to Kazu sleeping face in his room. “His teacher told them to wait for their mother before they can go home. Kazu cried, he thought he could never come home to me because he didn't have a mother.”
“Poor baby, and then?” Jun looked at his direction, full of care and fatherly loving that Ohno finally understood now.
“We made a promise. We won't need anyone because we have each other and we will never be separated no matter what.” Ohno sighed long, smiling as he remembered Kazu small pinky circling his that night. He turned and saw Jun had looked back at him with a soft gaze. He was drawn into that beautiful clear brown eyes, with the long eyelashes around them. He wants to swim inside that Chocolate orbs as he leaned in like Jun leaned on him. But then the bell rang.
“I… I… someone…” Ohno delighted to see Jun statured in his words, but the man quickly got hold of himself, stood up. “I'll get the door.”
Ohno inhaled quickly, calming his racing heartbeat. It had been so long since he felt attracted to someone and never as strong as this one. He hid his face behind his hand, as he heard the lock turned and the door pushed open. He looked to see Jun’s back stiffened before that man surprisingly called their guest name. “Sho!”

Date: 2017-10-08 11:48 am (UTC)This chapter is so cute and full of love!
Ohno was lucky that he still got another chance to live
and see how important Kazu is to him and vice versa.
My heart felt like it was squished just by imagining
Kazu's worried face. It's a good thing that both of them
have finally realized each other's worth! Aaaaaaannnnnddd!!!
Kazu's kindergarten life was so saaaaaaaaad.. :( :( :(
" Kazu cried, he thought he could never come home to me because he didn't have a mother.” WTF I cried because of this!!!
However, I felt so touched and sad for Ohno imagining how he worked when Kazu was still a baby... He really loves his son and it never changed. They had a fair share of pain but they still have each other so it's going to be ok..:(
Gosh, it seems that Jun was too kind to put up with Ohno
despite of their not-so-good relationship. Kazu is one of
the reasons and maybe the other one is something that Jun
cannot directly admit to Ohno! Hhahahah well...Ohno can't
admit it either! haahahaa Now I'm so excited on how they're
going to treat each other after that moment! Yaaaaaay!
But wait! Why is Sho there? Maybe he's just visiting?
Hmmm I wonder if he secretly likes Jun, too.. Hahhahha
Thank you so much for the update! <3 <3 <3

Date: 2017-10-12 01:58 pm (UTC)That story how Kazu's mother left Kazu and the hardship Satoshi had gone through raising Kazu alone just sad *sobs*
I find it funny that either Jun or Satoshi bother to correct the misunderstanding and Jun didn't have any qualms at all pretending to be Satoshi's spouse. Ohoho it seems like Jun is okay with Satoshi now (of course with the almost kiss XD)
okay so I'll be waiting patiently for the next chapter XD
